Acting - How To Improve

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 546

Acting is an exciting experience to be a part of and can be very rewarding, once you know the basics of being a good performer.  First, remember to never stand with your back facing the audience.  Always use far more expression than feels natural.  Finally, how you practice is how you will perform.  Keeping these basic principles in mind will help you grow as an actor and win over the audience.

Acting is all about the audience.  That is why it is vital that they are in a place where they can see all that is taking place at all times.  As a young actor, you may not take into account what they audience will see, as you are talking to another member of the cast.  However, making sure that you are constantly at an angle where the audience can see you and hear you is definitely the easiest thing you can do to improve your performance.  Standing, facing the audience, allows the audience members to see your expression, which may be imperative for them to understand what is taking place.  This tip will also allow the audience to better hear the performers, if they are not all given microphones.  Finally, making sure that you are always facing those whom you are performing for will ensure a more enjoyable experience for your viewers.

Expression is everything when it comes to acting.  Without expression, one is just reading with an audience.  Expression is what gets the audience involved.  Your expression is to your audience as imagery is to a reader of a good novel.  It allows your audience to experience the emotion that the character is to be feeling.  It draws the audience in and makes them a part of the performance.  Doing this is not easy.  It is always important to show enough expression that you feel very silly, at first.

Finally, there is nothing more important than how you practice.  How you practice each time is how you will perform.  You must practice each time as though you have an audience.  In doing this, you will allow your audience to see the best performance possible.  Just taking the time to put in the effort to make sure that you are conducting each practice time as you would a performance will make the inexperienced actor or actress much better than they ever dreamed of being.  Don't ever become complacent regardless of how well you act in your practices.  Be confident, be relaxed, but do not be arrogant.

There are many ways one can improve his or her ability regarding acting.  Making sure that your audience is your number one priority, using more expression than feels natural and giving each practice your all will ensure that your performance will be the best that it can be and that it will be a performance to remember for your audience.
